Some of Our Completed Projects
2024’s Big Project!
Thanks to major financial support from Laura’s Legacy, we have a new building within the school compound with a dedicated room for our Boys’ Club, a Women’s Refuge for domestic abuse victims, two special needs classrooms and accessible washrooms.
The Safe House
We built the Safe House to look after two young girls who had nowhere else to live. However due to the increased need, we now have 20 girls and have built a second Safe House.
Children’s Home Refurbishment
A small children’s home was struggling due to lack of funds and was in need of serious refurbishment to keep out the weather. Our local builder replaced all of the sides of the building to make it safer and more comfortable for the children.
Heart Surgery for a Young Girl
One of the girls in the children’s home (aged 8) was born with a serious heart condition. It has been managed well but there was a need to have a serious operation to do some investigations and treatment. We are pleased to say that the operation went well and although she has not been cured (sadly this is not an option), it has helped for the continuation of her treatment. She is a wonderful little girl and we are so pleased to see how well she is doing!
Flood Relief
After severe flooding which wiped out homes, crops and livelihoods, we were able to help by providing food, bedding and household items.
School Refurbishment
The school in one of the slums where we work was very run down. It is built of corrugated iron sheet and was in a very bad state, the iron had rusted into big holes which were a serious hazard to both children and teachers. Since then, we have also built a toilet block in the school as well as resurfacing the play area and classrooms. All these refurbishments have been done by a builder from the local community.
Solar Lights Programme
In the slum, there is often a lack of access to good lighting at home. Children struggle to read or do their homework as their families cannot afford electricity. As a result, some were using charcoal or naked flames in their houses which is both dangerous and bad for their health.
In response, we have provided solar lights to many of the children in the slum which has been a huge help to the families.
Baby Home Refurbishment
After many years of wear and tear from many children using it (!), the playroom in the Baby Home was in need of serious renovations. We repainted it, refurbished the toy box, decorated the walls, provided a new sofa, new play mats and a whole lot of new toys.
The photo above was taken on their first day in the updated playroom - they were a little surprised!
Bicycling to School
One of the boys in a children’s home was a very conscientious student who had to walk one and a half hours each way to college and back every day. This meant that he had very little time to study. We bought him a bicycle to make life easier for him.
